Flora

We like taking photographs of wild flowers and feel priviliged to live in the Sierra Nevada as this mountain range has 2,353 catalogued vascular plant species. Usually there are a number of plants in bloom throughout the winter, but when Crocus nevadensis and the first orchids come into flower in January it is like an announcement of the new season. In the field that borders the garden of Casa Pontia and in the pine woods around Cumbres Verdes different types of orchids grow. May is the most exciting month when peonies are in bloom, the fields near El Hervidero turn purple of gladioli and many other plant species are flowering.

The Trevenque area has a particular ecological value as many of the eighty endemic species of the Sierra Nevada are to be found in dolomitic territories. Behind the apparent absence of wildlife hides a microcosm of plants that are well adapted to extreme temperature changes and to the lack of a fertile, moist soil. In the arenales del Trevenque - limestone gravel - exclusive species grow like Rothmaleria granatensis. A list of the botanical gems in this area can be found in an article on the Trevenque on Waste Ideal.
